“We Will Bring Them Back to Face Justice”: India Reaffirms Hunt for Fugitives Lalit Modi and Vijay Mallya

New Delhi: The Indian government has once again underlined its determination to bring back high-profile economic offenders who have fled the country, signalling that efforts to ensure their return are actively underway.

Responding to questions about absconding businessmen Lalit Modi and Vijay Mallya, the Ministry of External Affairs said India has not diluted its stance on fugitives evading Indian law. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that New Delhi continues to engage with multiple foreign governments to pursue the return of individuals wanted by Indian investigative agencies.

He explained that extradition and repatriation efforts involve complex legal procedures across jurisdictions, but stressed that these challenges have not weakened India’s resolve. According to the MEA, sustained diplomatic engagement and legal coordination remain central to the government’s strategy.

Jaiswal emphasised that the objective is clear: fugitives accused of serious financial crimes must return to India and answer charges in Indian courts. He added that the government remains focused on navigating legal frameworks abroad while ensuring that India’s judicial process is upheld.
