New Delhi: The Supreme Court, while examining President Droupadi Murmu’s reference against its April ruling on gubernatorial powers, compared India’s constitutional stability with the chaos unfolding in neighbouring countries.

Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud-led bench, with CJI Sanjiv Gavai noting, “We are proud of our Constitution, see what is happening in neighbouring countries,” pointed to Nepal’s violent Gen Z-led protests that have left over 20 dead. Justice Vikram Nath added, “And Bangladesh,” recalling how student demonstrations toppled the Sheikh Hasina government and forced her to take refuge in India.

The core dispute stems from the Court’s April order that governors must decide on state bills within 30 days. The ruling was triggered by Tamil Nadu’s standoff, where Governor RN Ravi was accused of “arbitrarily” withholding assent.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, defending gubernatorial conduct, argued that statistics show 90% of bills are cleared within a month, with only 20 bills reserved between 1970 and 2025.
