Srinagar: National Conference president and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah on Thursday strongly condemned the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, attributing it to security and intelligence lapses and blaming Pakistan for trying to destabilise peace in the region.

Addressing the media in Srinagar, Abdullah warned that rising hostilities between India and Pakistan could spiral into a larger conflict if cooler heads did not prevail. “We don’t know what will happen tomorrow. Today, two countries are getting ready for a fight. Attempts are being made to ensure this doesn’t happen and a solution can be found to catch the terrorists and those behind it,” he said.

The veteran leader also endorsed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s stand on the Pahalgam terror attack but took sharp aim at Pakistan’s military establishment, especially Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir.

“There is no doubt that this was a matter of security and intelligence lapses. They (Pakistan) wouldn’t have liked the fact that we were leading our lives very well… Propaganda was spread among our people as well… So, they resorted to this (Pahalgam attack),” Abdullah said.

He also cautioned against the spillover impact on Indian Muslims, adding: “But they didn’t look at the fact that how it is going to affect the Muslims in India… A narrative has been going on for the last 10 years—to eliminate Muslims completely, to burn our mosques… we were dealing with it already.”

Responding to General Munir’s recent invocation of the two-nation theory, Abdullah said: “Now, Pakistan army chief General Asim Munir provoked by speaking about the two-nation theory… if war happens, it will come to the table, but what will happen on the table, only Allah knows.”

Abdullah reiterated the need for peace and diplomacy, urging both countries to find a sustainable resolution. “War is never the answer. Dialogue and accountability must take the front seat,” he said.
