Kolkata: In a move that has raised eyebrows, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former Union minister John Barla attended an administrative meeting chaired by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday. The event, held in North Bengal’s Alipurduar district, has sparked rumors of Barla potentially shifting allegiance to the Trinamool Congress (TMC).

Before the meeting began, Banerjee and Barla were seen exchanging pleasantries, adding fuel to the speculation. When questioned about his intentions of joining the TMC, Barla responded cryptically, saying, “Wait and see.”

The administrative meeting, like others chaired by Mamata Banerjee in various districts, was attended by TMC leaders, bureaucrats, and local residents. However, Barla’s presence stood out, especially given his BJP affiliation and history as a Union minister.

TMC leaders refrained from making direct comments but welcomed the possibility of leaders from opposing parties joining their ranks. “If someone believes in the leadership of Mamata Banerjee and wants to contribute to the development of Bengal, we are open to it,” said a senior TMC leader.
