Tensions flared in Manipur’s Thoubal district on Sunday after a mob torched the residence of Askar Ali Makakmayum, the BJP Minority Morcha’s state president, accusing him of supporting the controversial new Waqf law.

The incident marks a sharp escalation in public anger against the legislation, which has already triggered a wave of political and legal challenges across the country.

In the wake of the attack, Askar Ali took to Facebook to issue a public apology and appealed to the central government to reconsider the new law.
“Please do not politicise this issue. If anything I said has hurt anyone’s sentiments, I sincerely apologise. I request the central government to withdraw this law,” he wrote, tagging Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, and BJP Minority Morcha national president Jamal Siddiqui.

The violence has intensified focus on the growing unrest surrounding the Waqf law, as opposition parties and civil society groups continue to mount pressure on the government.

On Monday, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) announced that it would file a fresh petition in the Supreme Court challenging the law. The plea is being filed by Rajya Sabha MP Manoj Jha and senior party leader Fayyaz Ahmed.

With this, the total number of petitions in the apex court has risen to six. The most recent was filed by the Kerala Jamiat Ulama, a Sunni Muslim organisation. Earlier, legal challenges had been submitted by prominent leaders and organisations, including Congress MP Mohammad Javed, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi, AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan, the Association for Protection of Civil Rights, and Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind president Maulana Arshad Madani.

Adding further momentum to the movement, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board has declared nationwide protests starting April 11, aimed at voicing public discontent with what critics call a draconian and unjust law.
