Leh: In one of the most severe outbreaks of violence in Ladakh since the 1989 agitation, four people were killed and over 70 others injured, including 40 security personnel, after a peaceful shutdown in Leh turned into violent clashes on Wednesday. Police have arrested 50 people so far in connection with the unrest.

The protests were initially sparked by growing demands for statehood and constitutional safeguards, including inclusion of the region under the Sixth Schedule.

Amid the chaos, vehicles and the BJP office were set ablaze, prompting widespread political reactions. Left parties blamed the Modi government, calling it “solely responsible” for the breakdown of law and order.

Activist Sonam Wangchuk, who had been on a 15-day hunger strike demanding government action on local issues, ended his fast and appealed for peace, urging citizens and authorities to defuse tensions.
