Chennai: Actor-turned-politician Vijay has announced the temporary suspension of his statewide tour for two weeks following the tragic stampede in Karur that claimed the lives of 41 people. The decision was officially communicated by his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), via its X handle on Wednesday.

“In this situation where we are in pain and sorrow over the loss of our loved ones, the public meeting programme of our party leader for the next two weeks is being temporarily postponed. New details regarding these public meetings will be announced later,” the party tweeted.

This comes days after the tragedy, and marks Vijay’s first public response. In an emotional video statement released on Tuesday, he said:

“I have never faced such a painful situation in my life. My heart is aching, I am in deep pain. The truth about what transpired on the day of the stampede will come out soon. People come to see me in this campaign out of love and affection. In my life, I have never experienced such pain. I will soon meet the victims.”

Vijay also addressed Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, pleading:

“Chief Minister sir, I request you please do not harm my party functionaries. I will be available at my house or in my office and you can take any action against me, but not against them.”

The actor-politician faces criticism as reports indicate around 30,000 people had gathered at the venue, which had a capacity of just 10,000. Allegations have surfaced that there were insufficient arrangements for food and water, and the FIR suggests Vijay arrived late at 7 PM, potentially contributing to the overcrowding.

The stampede occurred during Vijay’s rally on September 27, sparking debates on safety measures, crowd management, and political accountability.
