In a deeply emotional moment following his defeat in the Vandre East constituency during the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections, Zeeshan Baba Siddique, son of prominent NCP leader Baba Siddique, expressed his disappointment and regret. Zeeshan, who contested the seat against Uddhav Sena’s Varun Sardesai, lost by a significant margin of more than 9,500 votes. Speaking to the media at Kalina University campus after the counting process on Saturday, he shared his feelings of personal failure.

“I don’t know what happened. I did not get time to think and ponder. I worked harder than the last time; I got more votes than the last time, but I don’t know what went wrong this time. I am feeling bad that I let my father down. There is nothing lower than this,” Zeeshan said, visibly emotional. He also reflected on the personal hardships he had faced in recent times, adding, “I lost my father one and a half months back, and now I’ve lost the elections.”

The defeat comes as a significant blow to the NCP, as Zeeshan was seen as a prominent candidate to carry forward his father’s legacy in the region. Despite putting in extensive effort during the campaign, including securing more votes than in the previous election, the results did not go in his favor, leaving him in a state of disbelief.

Meanwhile, the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance continues to dominate the election results, with the latest figures showing that the coalition is set to retain power in Maharashtra. As of Saturday afternoon, the BJP had won nine seats and was leading in 125, while its ally Shiv Sena had secured three seats, leading in 53. The NCP, which had high hopes for a strong showing, managed to win just two seats and was leading in 37.

The opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance, which includes the NCP (led by Sharad Pawar), Congress, and Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray), suffered a major setback. Despite high hopes and confident predictions from senior leaders, the MVA was leading in just 50 seats—a far cry from the expectations of a strong challenge to the ruling coalition.

The counting process, which began at 8 am on Saturday, has revealed a clear path toward victory for the Mahayuti alliance. While the results continue to pour in, it is increasingly evident that the opposition’s hopes for a comeback are fading. As the BJP-led coalition edges closer to securing a majority, the focus is now shifting to the formation of the new government in Maharashtra.

Zeeshan Baba Siddique’s emotional response to his defeat highlights the personal stakes involved in the high-stakes political battle in Maharashtra, as the Siddique family’s political journey faces a difficult turn.
