Maharashtra Election Results 2024: Congress Faces Major Setback as Balasaheb Thorat and Prithviraj Chavan Lose Key Seats

In a devastating blow to the Congress party, two of its prominent leaders, Balasaheb Thorat and Prithviraj Chavan, have suffered significant losses in the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections. Thorat, the veteran Congress leader and current Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader, was defeated in the Sangamner seat by a margin of 10,560 votes. Thorat, who has been a stalwart of Congress since 1985, secured 101,826 votes, but was outpaced by Shiv Sena’s Amol Dhondiba Khatal, who received 112,386 votes.

Thorat’s defeat marks a major setback for the Congress party in the state, as he has long been a key figure in the party’s Maharashtra leadership. His loss signals a shift in the political landscape of the region, particularly for the Congress, which is already grappling with declining support in the face of a strong BJP-led Mahayuti alliance.

In another crushing blow, former Maharashtra Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan lost the Karad South assembly seat to Dr. Atulbaba Suresh Bhosale of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Chavan, who has held significant influence in Maharashtra politics, was defeated by a massive margin of 39,355 votes. Dr. Bhosale secured a commanding 139,505 votes, while Chavan could only manage 100,150 votes in this highly contested seat.

Chavan’s loss comes as a significant blow to Congress, especially given his past leadership role in the state government. The defeat highlights the growing dominance of the BJP and its allies in Maharashtra, even as the Congress struggles to maintain its hold on key constituencies.

As the results continue to unfold, these high-profile defeats underscore the challenges facing Congress in the state. The party’s loss of such senior leaders is likely to have a ripple effect on its future prospects in Maharashtra politics, as the BJP-led alliance cements its hold on the state.
