In the wake of the catastrophic collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, US President Joe Biden has praised the swift action taken by personnel aboard the cargo ship ‘Dali’, which collided with the bridge, triggering a harrowing chain of events that sent vehicles and individuals plunging into the river below.
The shipping company Synergy Maritime Group, responsible for managing the Singapore-flagged freighter, disclosed that the entire crew of 22 members aboard the vessel are of Indian nationality. Amidst the chaos ensuing from the collision, the crew demonstrated remarkable presence of mind by promptly alerting the Maryland Department of Transportation about their loss of vessel control. This proactive communication enabled local authorities to swiftly close the bridge to traffic, averting further disaster and undoubtedly saving lives.
President Biden, addressing the nation from the White House, lauded the decisive actions taken by the ship’s crew, emphasizing that their timely intervention played a crucial role in mitigating the impact of the bridge collapse. He stated, “Everything so far indicates that this was a terrible accident. At this time, we have no other reason to believe there was any intentional act here.”
Tragically, six individuals who were reported missing following the bridge collapse are now presumed dead, according to the Maryland State Police. The search-and-rescue efforts are ongoing, with authorities racing against time to locate any survivors amidst the debris and murky waters of the river.
Highlighting the significance of the Port of Baltimore as a vital trade artery, President Biden underscored its pivotal role in facilitating the movement of goods and vehicles. He assured the nation that efforts are underway to restore operations at the port, which serves as a critical hub for both imports and exports.
Meanwhile, amidst the grim aftermath of the tragedy, it has emerged that two Guatemalan construction workers are among the missing individuals. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Guatemala confirmed that the two workers hailed from San Luis, Peten, and Camotan, Chiquimula, respectively.
