US President Joe Biden touched down in New Delhi on Friday evening to partake in the G20 Summit, marking his inaugural visit to India since assuming the presidency in 2020.
Upon his arrival at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI), President Biden exchanged warm greetings with the waiting crowd and was personally received by India’s Minister of State, General VK Singh. During a brief interaction, Biden expressed his delight, stating, “I’m happy to be here.”
The highlight of his visit is the scheduled bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the latter’s official residence, 7 Lok Kalyan Marg, on Friday evening. This meeting holds significance as it will assess the progress on commitments made during Prime Minister Modi’s state visit to Washington in June.
Accompanying President Biden on Air Force One were key members of his delegation, including U.S. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, Deputy Chief of Staff Jen O’Malley Dillon, and Director of Oval Office Operations Annie Tomasini.
During the G20 Summit, President Biden intends to champion causes dear to him, including climate change and reforming international institutions such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. His visit coincides with India’s historic decision to include the African Union as a G20 member, a move that has garnered widespread acclaim from global leaders.
The bilateral talks between President Biden and Prime Minister Modi are expected to cover a range of critical topics, including discussions on Ukraine, emerging technology, and the status of previously announced agreements involving General Atomics’ drones and General Electric’s jet engines.
