Mumbai/Washington: In a swift response to an urgent appeal, the United States Embassy granted an emergency visa to the family of Neelam Shinde, an Indian student who slipped into a coma after a severe road accident in California on February 14. Her father, cousin, and uncle are set to take the next flight to the US, reported NDTV.

MEA Steps In, Expedites Visa Process

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) formally intervened on Thursday, requesting US authorities to fast-track the visa process for Neelam’s family so they could be by her side during the medical emergency. Following this, an emergency visa interview was scheduled at the US consulate in Mumbai at 9 AM on Friday.

Earlier in the day, the Consulate General of India in San Francisco extended its support to Neelam’s family, stating, “We convey our sympathy and solidarity to the family of Neelam Shinde, a victim of a serious road accident in California. We have been in constant touch with the hospital, family, and friends for the last several days and are providing all possible assistance.”

Severe Injuries, Driver Arrested

Neelam, a 35-year-old student from Maharashtra’s Satara district, suffered critical head, hand, and chest injuries after being hit by a four-wheeler in California. She was rushed to UC Davis Health hospital near Sacramento, where she remains in a coma in the ICU. Reports confirm that the driver responsible for the accident has been arrested.
