Massive Equipment Losses Reportedly Linked to Iran Conflict
A newly released report linked to the United States Congress has revealed that the US military lost or suffered damage to at least 42 aircraft during “Operation Epic Fury,” the large-scale military campaign launched against Iran earlier this year.
The findings, published by the Congressional Research Service, suggest the operation may have caused significantly heavier military losses and financial costs than previously understood.
The report also warned that the final number of damaged or destroyed aircraft could change further because of classification restrictions, continuing combat assessments and unresolved attribution issues connected to the conflict.
Advanced Fighter Jets and Drones Among Reported Losses
According to the report, the aircraft affected during the operation included several advanced fighter jets, surveillance systems, drones and refuelling aircraft used by the US military.
Among the reported losses were:
- Four F-15E Strike Eagle fighter jets
- One F-35 Lightning II
- One A-10 Thunderbolt II
- Seven KC-135 Stratotanker tanker aircraft
- One E-3 Sentry surveillance aircraft
- Two MC-130J Commando II aircraft
- One HH-60W Jolly Green II helicopter
- Twenty-four MQ-9 Reaper drones
- One MQ-4C Triton
The inclusion of high-value aircraft such as the F-35 and multiple intelligence and refuelling platforms has intensified discussion around the scale and operational risks of the campaign.
Pentagon Cost Estimate Climbs to $29 Billion
The financial impact of the military operation has also risen sharply.
During a recent hearing before a House Appropriations subcommittee, Acting Pentagon Comptroller Jules W. Hurst III stated that the estimated cost of operations connected to the Iran conflict had climbed to nearly $29 billion.
According to Pentagon officials, a major portion of the increase is linked to repairing damaged aircraft and replacing destroyed military equipment.
The updated estimate has triggered growing debate in Washington over the long-term financial and strategic consequences of the operation.
Report Based on Pentagon and CENTCOM Data
The Congressional Research Service said its findings were compiled using media reports alongside official statements issued by the United States Department of Defense and United States Central Command.
However, analysts caution that the complete operational picture may still remain partially classified due to the sensitive nature of ongoing military assessments.
The report’s release is expected to increase pressure on US defense officials to provide greater transparency regarding the scale of losses and operational outcomes tied to the Iran campaign.
Questions Grow Over Strategic Impact of Operation
The disclosures have already sparked renewed scrutiny over “Operation Epic Fury,” which became one of the most aggressive US military operations in the region in recent years.
Critics are expected to question whether the strategic objectives of the campaign justified the scale of military expenditure and equipment losses now emerging through official assessments.
At the same time, supporters of the operation argue that the strikes significantly weakened Iran’s military infrastructure and regional operational capabilities.
The broader geopolitical and military consequences of the conflict continue to unfold as tensions in the region remain high.
