Mumbai: Upset over substandard quality food grains being supplied to the tribal population in the state, Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari on Thursday assured action. A delegation led by Shramajivi Sanghatna leader Vivek Pandit called on the Governor at Raj Bhavan and drew his attention to the worms and insect infested food grains being supplied to tribals in the state.

On Wednesday, the Tribal Development Corporation (TDC) distributed the bags of rice at the Chimbapada village and other tribal villages of Bhiwandi taluka. The joy of the tribals was short lived as when they opened the bags and found that the grains were infested with a large number of germs in it. The tribals raised an alarm over the same.

Following the complaints by the tribals who had been given the substandard and germs filled rice, the Shramajivi Sanghatana took up the issue. Founder president of the Sanghatana and chairman of the committee on the status of the schemes for tribals Vivek Pandit reached Raj Bhavan and presented a plate of rice which was filled with germs.

The Governor who saw the quality of rice got a shock of his life and was visibly annoyed according to Pandit. Later while speaking to the media, Vivek Pandit said that during the interaction Governor he pointed out several irregularities by the tribal development corporation and if such poor quality of food grains is consumed by the tribals it will drive them to death he said.

Pandit demanded a high-level inquiry into the functioning of the corporation. He argued that he had been complaining about the functioning of the corporation to the government from time to time.

The Shramajivi Sanghatna leader also said that he raised the issue of coverage of Khavti scheme for all tribals, forest land to the needy tribals, online education, caste certificates etc during the meeting and the Governor gave a positive assurance to them.

He also said that the Governor has assured him that he would not let the issues be shelved but would go through the demands and call for a meeting with the secretaries to resolve them and if need be call Pandit for the resolution of the issues. “I will work on each and every point raised by you and would not put it in cold storage,” disclosed Pandit.

Pandit also handed overall reports of the review committee submitted to the Government on different subjects and districts for action he said. The delegation includes the President of the Sanghatana, Rambhau Varna, General Secretary Vijay Jadhav, and Thane district president Ashok Sapte among others.
