New Delhi: Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, strongly criticized the previous UPA government for signing Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) that he claims weakened India’s domestic manufacturing sector. His remarks come as India nears the final stages of negotiations on the India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA), which Goyal believes will be a milestone towards the nation’s development goals.
Addressing a media interaction on Saturday, Goyal said, “The UPA government signed FTAs with our competitors, with those countries who would sell their products in India for cheaper prices to destroy India’s manufacturing sector. The FTAs signed during the UPA rule were not in the best interests of the country.”
In contrast, Goyal highlighted that the FTAs signed under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership reflect a strategic shift in India’s global trade policy.
“FTAs signed by PM Narendra Modi are with Mauritius, Australia, EFTA countries, UAE, and now the UK. Talks are going on with other developed countries. India now signs FTAs with countries which do not compete with us, but complement us.”
He emphasized that the India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) will not only enhance bilateral trade but also act as a “stepping stone towards our dream of a Viksit Bharat (Developed India)”.
Goyal asserted that India is no longer a passive participant in trade talks and is now shaping global deals that align with national interests and economic sovereignty.
“Our focus is on mutually beneficial partnerships, not blind imports. India now chooses friends, not rivals, for FTAs,” he added.
