Lucknow: In a major push to strengthen rural education, the Uttar Pradesh government is set to roll out digital libraries across all digitally connected villages, allowing students to access modern learning facilities without leaving their hometowns. The initiative is aimed at helping rural youth prepare for civil services and other competitive examinations at the village level itself.
Officials said the new facilities will function from gram panchayat secretariats and are expected to become operational by the end of January. District administrations have already begun finalising the purchase of computers and other technical equipment, while arrangements for furniture are nearing completion.
Each digital library will be designed as a technology-enabled study centre. The facilities will include internet connectivity, computer systems, LED display screens and surveillance cameras to ensure safety and smooth functioning. Along with printed books, students will be able to use digital study material such as e-books, recorded lectures, audio lessons, practice tests and interactive quizzes.
The project is being implemented with a uniform model so that students in different districts receive similar facilities. The estimated cost of setting up one digital library is around ₹4 lakh, covering books, IT infrastructure and furniture. Officials believe this investment will significantly improve access to quality educational resources in rural areas.
Administration and daily operations of the libraries will be handled locally by gram panchayat officials, while designated officers will monitor usage, maintenance and overall performance. The government expects that this community-based approach will ensure better upkeep and greater participation from students.
