UP Storm Tragedy: 56 Dead as Fierce Winds, Lightning and Heavy Rain Wreak Havoc Across Districts

Unseasonal Weather Leaves Trail of Destruction in Uttar Pradesh

A powerful spell of thunderstorms, intense rainfall and lightning strikes caused widespread devastation across several districts of Uttar Pradesh, claiming at least 56 lives and damaging homes, trees and electricity infrastructure, officials confirmed on Thursday.

The sudden change in weather on Wednesday evening triggered deadly incidents ranging from collapsing structures and uprooted trees to fatal lightning strikes in rural and urban pockets of the state.

Prayagraj and Bhadohi Among Worst-Hit Districts

According to district-wise figures released by authorities, the highest number of deaths was reported from Prayagraj, where 17 people lost their lives during the storm-related incidents. Officials said strong winds and heavy rain caused severe disruption in multiple localities.

Another 16 fatalities were recorded in Bhadohi, while nine people died in Fatehpur. Several other districts including Badaun, Pratapgarh, Chandauli, Kushinagar and Sonbhadra also reported casualties linked to rain and lightning.

Local administration officials said many roads were blocked after trees and electric poles collapsed under the force of the storm.

Lightning Strikes and Structural Collapses Trigger Fatalities

In separate incidents across the state, several victims died after being struck by lightning or trapped under collapsed structures during heavy winds.

In Pratapgarh district, strong gusts reportedly brought down walls and cemented sheds, leading to multiple deaths. Police officials said one young man died after debris from a collapsed shed fell on him during the storm.

Meanwhile, in Kanpur Dehat, a teenage woman died after lightning struck near a tree where she had taken shelter with goats during heavy rainfall. Authorities said livestock were also killed in the incident, while another person sustained injuries.

In Deoria district, two elderly residents reportedly lost their lives after separate lightning strikes during the downpour.

Houses Damaged, Electricity Infrastructure Hit

Officials from multiple districts confirmed that the storm caused extensive damage to residential properties and power infrastructure. Fallen trees and snapped electric poles disrupted movement and electricity supply in several areas.

Revenue teams and disaster response officials have begun collecting reports regarding damage to homes, crops and livestock.

Yogi Adityanath Orders Immediate Relief Measures

Following the large-scale destruction, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath reviewed the situation and directed district administrations to speed up relief and compensation efforts.

The Chief Minister instructed officials to ensure financial aid and emergency support reach affected families within 24 hours. He also ordered senior administrative officers to visit impacted villages and supervise rescue and rehabilitation work on the ground.

Authorities from the revenue and agriculture departments have additionally been asked to conduct detailed surveys to assess crop losses and property damage caused by the unseasonal weather conditions.

Weather Alert Keeps Administration on Edge

With forecasts indicating the possibility of continued weather instability in parts of North India, officials have been directed to remain on alert for any further emergencies linked to thunderstorms and lightning activity.

Disaster management teams are monitoring vulnerable districts as restoration work continues in storm-hit regions across the state.
