Mumbai: Mumbai ushered in the New Year with an unexpected twist in the weather as heavy, unseasonal rain swept through parts of the city early Thursday morning. Contrary to the usual dry and mild conditions associated with January, large sections of South Mumbai witnessed monsoon-like showers, catching residents off guard just hours after New Year celebrations ended.

The rainfall began before sunrise, initially as light drizzle, but quickly intensified in pockets of Colaba, Byculla, Lower Parel and nearby areas. Motorists on key stretches such as the Coastal Road and Eastern Freeway reported reduced visibility as steady rain continued for several hours before easing by morning.

In contrast, Mumbai’s suburban belt experienced a milder impact. Areas from Bandra to Dahisar and Kurla to Mulund saw only sporadic showers and persistent drizzling. While rainfall remained limited, strong cold winds pushed minimum temperatures down to around 16°C, adding to the winter chill.

Meteorologists noted that the sudden rainfall was unusual for this time of year, but environmental experts pointed to a positive outcome. The showers are expected to temporarily improve Mumbai’s air quality, which had deteriorated sharply in late December due to construction activity and weak wind circulation. The city’s AQI had remained in the ‘Unhealthy’ to ‘Severe’ range, frequently crossing dangerous levels.
