Union Minister Ramdas Athawale Defends CM Fadnavis Govt’s Rollback of Three-Language Policy Amid Marathi Opposition

Raipur: Union Minister Ramdas Athawale on Tuesday weighed in on the heated debate over Maharashtra’s three-language formula, defending the state government’s move to withdraw mandatory Hindi teaching in Marathi-medium schools.

Speaking to reporters in Raipur, Athawale acknowledged the concerns raised by sections of the Marathi-speaking community. “There was a controversy in Maharashtra regarding the three-language formula. Hindi has always been our national language, and we respect it, but some people argued that there is no need to teach any other language in Marathi schools,” he said.

Athawale emphasised that Marathi-speaking citizens strongly opposed the mandatory inclusion of Hindi from Class 1, prompting the Maharashtra government to act quickly. “Marathi people took an opposing stance. However, Devendra Fadnavis’ government cancelled the decision to (mandatorily) use the Hindi language even before any agitation took place,” he added.

The state’s rollback of the government resolutions (GRs) had come after initial protests from opposition parties and public backlash. However, Athawale credited the Fadnavis-led administration for addressing the concerns proactively before they could escalate.
