In a fiery address at a rally in Guhagar, Ratnagiri district, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader and former Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray lambasted the BJP, alleging their campaign for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections aims at securing over 400 seats to facilitate constitutional amendments.
Thackeray’s remarks came as he criticized the BJP’s agenda, claiming it as an attempt to stifle dissenting voices and push through constitutional alterations. He warned against the ‘one nation one election’ concept, labeling it as a move towards dictatorship.
“Understand the strategy of the BJP… they want more than 400 seats because they don’t want opposing voices when they go ahead with their plan of changing the Constitution,” Thackeray asserted, highlighting concerns over the potential erosion of democratic norms.
The Shiv Sena leader’s accusations were underscored by recent events in Parliament, where over 100 MPs were suspended during crucial legislative sessions, leading to the passage of significant bills without adequate debate.
Thackeray’s assertions echoed sentiments expressed by BJP MP Anantkumar Hegde, who suggested that a two-thirds majority in both Houses of Parliament was necessary to amend the Constitution and rectify purported distortions introduced by the Congress.
Following Hegde’s controversial remarks, the BJP moved swiftly to quell the ensuing controversy, dismissing his comments as personal opinions and seeking clarification from him.
Reflecting on internal rifts within the Shiv Sena, Thackeray addressed the rebellion in 2022 that resulted in the party’s split. He reiterated his commitment to Maharashtra’s welfare, lamenting betrayal from former allies who he had entrusted with ministerial posts and legislative roles.
“Elsewhere in the country, the head of a political party becomes chief minister. Just because of that, you betray me,” Thackeray expressed, without directly naming individuals but hinting at perceived betrayals within his own ranks.
