In a move aimed at providing relief to the public ahead of the anticipated Lok Sabha elections scheduled for April-May, the government has announced a reduction in the prices of petrol and diesel by Rs 2 per litre.

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas made the announcement via a post on social media platform X, revealing that Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) have revised the prices of petrol and diesel nationwide. The revised prices will come into effect from March 15, 2024, at 6 am.

Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, echoed the government’s commitment to the welfare of the citizens in a post on the same platform, stating that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decision to cut prices demonstrates his dedication to the well-being of millions of Indians.

The Ministry further elaborated that the reduction in fuel prices is expected to stimulate consumer spending and decrease operating expenses for various sectors, including the over 58 lakh heavy goods vehicles reliant on diesel, 6 crore cars, and 27 crore two-wheelers.

According to the Ministry, the lowered prices will not only provide citizens with increased disposable income but also contribute to the growth of the tourism and travel industries while aiding in the control of inflation.

Moreover, the decision is anticipated to bolster consumer confidence, reduce costs for transportation-dependent businesses, enhance profitability across logistics, manufacturing, and retail sectors, and alleviate financial burdens on farmers regarding tractor operations and pump sets.

The move comes as a timely intervention to ease the economic burden on citizens and stimulate various sectors, aligning with the government’s efforts to bolster the nation’s economy amidst the upcoming electoral season.

By prioritizing the welfare of the populace through such measures, the government aims to foster economic stability and enhance the overall quality of life for its citizens.
