In a dramatic address before the US Congress, US President Donald Trump declared that his intervention prevented a dangerous military conflict between India and Pakistan from escalating into a full-scale nuclear war.
Speaking during his State of the Union (SOTU) speech at the United States Capitol, Trump told lawmakers that his diplomatic outreach helped calm tensions during a four-day military standoff between the two nuclear-armed neighbours last year.
Trump: “I Stopped Eight Wars”
Addressing members of Congress, Trump claimed that his leadership played a decisive role in preventing or ending eight global conflicts. Referring to the India–Pakistan episode as one of the most serious, he said the situation could have spiraled into a catastrophic confrontation without US involvement.
“I stopped eight wars,” Trump told Congress, adding that millions of lives were potentially at stake. He went further, claiming that around 35 million people could have died if the crisis had not been contained. According to him, even Pakistan’s Prime Minister was in grave danger during the escalation.
However, Trump did not explain the specific diplomatic steps taken by Washington or provide evidence detailing how US mediation directly influenced the de-escalation.
A Near Nuclear Flashpoint?
Trump described the India–Pakistan standoff as a moment when the world came dangerously close to nuclear conflict. Though tensions between the two nations have flared repeatedly over decades, his speech framed the incident as one of the most alarming episodes in recent memory.
While US administrations have often encouraged restraint between New Delhi and Islamabad, official records of direct intervention during that specific four-day period remain limited in the public domain.
List of Conflicts Cited by Trump
During the speech, Trump listed several international disputes that he said were resolved under his leadership. These included tensions between Cambodia and Thailand, Israel and Iran, Egypt and Ethiopia, Armenia and Azerbaijan, Congo and Rwanda, Serbia and Kosovo, and Israel and Hamas. He also stated that his administration was actively working toward ending the ongoing Russia–Ukraine conflict.
‘Golden Age of America’ Narrative
Beyond foreign policy, Trump used the SOTU platform to project confidence about America’s global standing. He declared that the United States had entered what he called a “golden age,” describing the country as stronger, richer and more influential than ever.
Framing his presidency as a historic turnaround, Trump positioned the US as a stabilising force in world affairs. His remarks blended domestic achievements with bold international claims, reinforcing his narrative of decisive leadership on the global stage.
