Washington: Former US President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Wednesday seeking to ban transgender athletes from competing in women’s sports. The directive also pushes the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to amend its policies before the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
The order grants the US Secretary of State the authority to pressure the IOC into revising eligibility standards for women’s sporting events. It aims to promote “fairness, safety, and the best interests of female athletes” by ensuring that participation is determined based on sex, rather than gender identity or testosterone reduction.
Trump emphasized the need for sweeping changes, stating, “The IOC needs to change everything having to do with the Olympics and having to do with this absolutely ridiculous subject.”
Additionally, the executive order directs the Secretary of State and the Department of Homeland Security to “review and adjust” policies concerning the entry of transgender women into the United States for sporting competitions.
