New Delhi:  Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Thursday lashed out at US President Donald Trump for claiming that India would stop importing Russian oil by the end of the year. Tharoor criticised Trump for “making announcements on behalf of New Delhi,” calling it an overstep in diplomatic conduct.

“It’s not appropriate for President Trump to make announcements about India’s decisions. India will make its own announcements. We don’t tell the world what Trump will do — he should not be telling the world what India will do,” said Tharoor.

President Trump, during a press briefing at the White House with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, had said, “India has told me they will stop buying oil from Russia by the end of the year. It’s a process, but they have been absolutely great.”

However, Indian officials swiftly clarified that no such commitment had been made, stressing that India’s energy policy remains guided by national interests, focusing on stable prices and secure supplies for its consumers.
