New Delhi: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has formally responded to the Department of Telecommunications’ (DoT) back-reference dated June 16, 2025, concerning TRAI’s earlier recommendations on allocating additional spectrum to Indian Railways for safety and security applications.

Earlier, on July 26, 2023, the DoT had informed TRAI that the Indian Railways had sought an additional 5 MHz of paired spectrum in the 700 MHz band, requesting it be allocated free of cost to strengthen its critical safety and security infrastructure. Following stakeholder consultations, TRAI submitted its detailed recommendations on December 20, 2024.

However, in its back-reference dated June 16, 2025, the DoT sought reconsideration of certain recommendations, as permitted under Section 11 of the TRAI Act, 1997.

After a thorough review, TRAI has now issued its revised response, which has also been made publicly available on the authority’s website at www.trai.gov.in.

For further information, stakeholders can contact Akhilesh Kumar Trivedi, Advisor (Networks, Spectrum and Licensing), TRAI, at +91-11-20907758.
