New Delhi: A four-storey residential building collapsed in northeast Delhi’s Mustafabad area in the early hours of Saturday, leaving at least four people dead and several others feared trapped beneath the rubble. The tragic incident was reported to authorities at 3:02 am, prompting an immediate emergency response.

According to Delhi Police, at least 14 people have been rescued so far and shifted to GTB Hospital, where four victims were declared dead upon arrival. The condition of some of the others remains critical.

Rescue efforts are ongoing, with teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Delhi Fire Service, and local police working tirelessly through the morning. A senior NDRF official at the site noted the extreme challenges faced by rescuers due to the narrow and congested lanes in Mustafabad.

“Heavy machinery is difficult to bring into these tight alleys. Despite that, we are continuing to clear the debris manually while coordinating with local teams,” the official said, adding that around 12 people are still believed to be trapped under the debris.

Locals reported being jolted awake by a loud crash, followed by chaos as cries for help rang out in the dark. Several residents from nearby buildings rushed in to assist even before official rescue teams arrived.

While rescue operations continue, authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the collapse. Police officials said they are examining whether structural violations or substandard construction materials may have contributed to the tragedy.

The incident has sparked concern over building safety in the densely populated Mustafabad locality, where illegal construction and poor maintenance are often cited as risks.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal expressed grief over the incident, writing on social media, “Deeply saddened by the building collapse in Mustafabad. Our thoughts are with the victims’ families. Rescue efforts are underway and all help will be provided.”

As emergency teams work against the clock, the priority remains rescuing the trapped and ensuring medical aid reaches the injured without delay. Further updates are awaited as the operation progresses.
