Palamu: In a major breakthrough in Jharkhand’s ongoing anti-Maoist offensive, security forces on Tuesday gunned down top Maoist commander Tulsi Bhuiyan in the Hussainabad subdivision of Palamu district, marking the second consecutive day of successful operations against the outlawed group.

The encounter, which began late Monday night, continued into Tuesday morning with heavy gunfire exchanged between the Maoists and joint teams of the CRPF and state police. An SLR rifle was recovered from the scene, and security officials believe several other Maoists may have been injured or killed, though confirmations are awaited.

“This was a significant strike against Maoist leadership in the region. The operation is still underway and a massive search is being conducted in the nearby forest areas,” said a senior police official.

Palamu SP Rishma Rameshan, along with top officials of the CRPF, is monitoring the operation on the ground.

The offensive was based on precise intelligence inputs regarding the presence of Nitesh, a wanted Maoist commander carrying a Rs 15 lakh bounty, and his squad in the Sitachuan forest, near the borders of Mohammadganj and Haidernagar police stations. Another high-profile Maoist, Sanjay Godram (Rs 10 lakh reward), is also believed to be operating with this group.

As forces closed in on their location, the Maoists opened fire, prompting a swift and fierce response from the security personnel.

This encounter follows a similar gun battle on Monday in the Netarhat area of Latehar district, where Maoist commander Manish Yadav (Rs 5 lakh reward) was shot dead. During the same operation, another top Maoist, Kundan Kharwar (Rs 10 lakh reward), was arrested.

Just days earlier, on May 24, Maoists Pappu Lohara (Rs 10 lakh) and Prabhat Lohara (Rs 5 lakh) were killed in an encounter in the Ichwar forest of Latehar, with another cadre captured alive while injured.

In one of the year’s largest crackdowns, security forces had killed eight Maoists, including Prayag Manjhi (carrying a staggering Rs 1 crore reward), in Lugu Hill, Bokaro district on April 21.
