A nine-year-old boy died after being struck and run over by an Innova Crysta in Mumbai’s Bandra area on Sunday afternoon. The incident occurred near Jijamata Garden on John Baptist Road, where the child was reportedly crossing the road.
The deceased has been identified as Ansh Ravindra Gupta.
According to the police, the crash took place between approximately 2:15 pm and 2:30 pm on August 30. The vehicle was allegedly travelling at high speed when it hit the child.
Police have arrested the driver, identified as 45-year-old Megha Rawal, a resident of Bandra. Investigators suspect that she may have been distracted while speaking on her mobile phone when the accident occurred.
Child Dies After Being Run Over
Police said the collision caused the boy to fall onto the road, following which the vehicle ran over him. He sustained critical injuries in the crash.
Ansh was rushed to Holy Family Hospital in Bandra for emergency treatment. However, doctors declared him dead on arrival.
The incident has raised fresh concerns over dangerous driving and the use of mobile phones while behind the wheel, particularly in busy residential and pedestrian areas of Mumbai.
Bandra Police Arrest Woman Driver
Following the fatal accident, Bandra Police took Rawal into custody and registered a case in connection with the boy’s death.
The case has been filed under Sections 105, 281 and 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with Section 184 of the Motor Vehicles Act.
The provisions relate to culpable homicide not amounting to murder, rash driving, acts endangering life or personal safety, and dangerous driving.
Police are continuing to investigate the crash and are examining the circumstances leading up to the collision, including the allegations that the driver was using or distracted by her mobile phone.
The investigation will determine the exact sequence of events and establish responsibility for the fatal accident.
