Thug Life Release Put on Hold in Karnataka: Kamal Haasan Tells Court ‘I Can Wait’

Bengaluru: Tamil actor and Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) chief Kamal Haasan has chosen to defer the release of his much-anticipated film Thug Life in Karnataka, following backlash over his earlier remarks about the origins of the Kannada language. His legal counsel informed the Karnataka High Court on Tuesday that the actor had voluntarily decided to wait.

“He has said that ‘I can wait’, and the release of the movie in Karnataka can also wait,” senior advocate Dhyan Chinappa told the court, making it clear that the film will not be released in the state “for now.”

The statement came after the court made pointed observations about Haasan’s prior comments, which had sparked controversy. The petition being heard was related to enabling the screening of the film in Karnataka, amid growing opposition.

Haasan’s legal team also submitted a letter he sent to the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC), calling it a genuine attempt to express his respect for the Kannada language and the people of Karnataka. “It has been written with all sincerity about language,” Chinappa said while reading from the letter.

The counsel added, “Because of a statement he made, he should not be compelled to say something else. Everyone has a right to express themselves.”
