New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Atishi has been booked for violating the Model Code of Conduct, sparking a fierce reaction from Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal. On Monday, Kejriwal criticized the Election Commission (EC) and the political system after Atishi was booked for allegedly using a government vehicle for campaign purposes ahead of the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections.
Earlier in the day, a First Information Report (FIR) was filed against Atishi based on a complaint from the returning officer. The complaint stated that a Public Works Department (PWD) government vehicle was being used to transport campaign materials to AAP’s election office, which constitutes a violation of the Model Code of Conduct.
The Model Code of Conduct came into effect in Delhi after the EC announced the election schedule on January 7. The Delhi Assembly elections are set to take place in a single phase on February 5, with votes to be counted on February 8.
Reacting to the incident, Kejriwal took to social media, accusing the Election Commission of unfairly targeting AAP leaders while turning a blind eye to alleged violations by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Kejriwal pointed out that BJP leaders have been openly distributing money, sarees, blankets, and gold chains to voters, yet no action has been taken against them.
“Their leaders openly distribute money, sarees, blankets, gold chains etc., get fake votes made, yet not even an FIR is registered. But an FIR is immediately registered against Chief Minister Atishi ji,” Kejriwal tweeted in Hindi.
Kejriwal further stated that AAP was fighting against the “rotten system” that needs to be changed. He emphasized that both the BJP and Congress are part of the same corrupt system that the AAP is determined to cleanse.
