New Delhi: The Opposition INDIA alliance on Thursday formally backed Justice (Retd.) B Sudershan Reddy, former Supreme Court judge, as its nominee for the Vice-Presidential election, framing the contest as a struggle of ideology rather than mere numbers.
Speaking to reporters before filing his nomination, Reddy expressed optimism about cross-party support, saying, “Since I don’t belong to any political party, I believe everyone would support me. This is a battle of ideology.” He added that his nomination process was straightforward: “I am going to the Returning Officer to submit my nomination paper.”
The nomination filing, scheduled for 11:30 AM, is expected to see leaders from various INDIA bloc parties accompanying Reddy. He will be contesting against the NDA nominee, CP Radhakrishnan.
Earlier, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge emphasized the importance of Reddy’s nomination in restoring fairness and impartiality to the Rajya Sabha, highlighting that opposition members have often been denied the opportunity to raise matters of public concern. “To resist and decisively act against these transgressions in Parliament, the nation needs an exemplary, impartial Justice B. Sudershan Reddy as Vice-President. His nomination represents our collective resolve to defend and uphold the democratic ideals that define India,” Kharge said.
Kharge further praised Reddy’s career, noting, “Reddy’s life and work reflect the spirit of our Constitution, a commitment to fairness, compassion, and the empowerment of every citizen.”
