Former Bihar deputy chief minister and Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Tejashwi Yadav stirred controversy on Saturday with his promise to construct five new airports in the state if the INDIA bloc comes to power in the ensuing Lok Sabha elections. “For better connectivity in Bihar, we are going to build 5 new airports in the state in Purnea, Bhagalpur, Muzzafarpur, Gopalganj, and Raxaul,” he announced during the release of the party manifesto for the elections.

Yadav’s announcement triggered a wave of criticism on social media, with netizens questioning the feasibility of his proposal and suggesting alternative priorities for the state’s development.

One netizen, Sanjay Singh, dismissed Yadav’s plan as a mere gimmick, asking, “Darbhanga mein kitni flights operational hai sir ji? (How many flights are operational from Darbhanga?) What is the use of Muzaffarpur airport? Isn’t it just political gimmick? Will MUZ airport be commercially viable?”

Another user expressed skepticism, commenting, “He is neither in the central government nor in the state government, still lying to fool people. Better to prepare for Tihar.”

A pointed query surfaced: “Is the city developed… Will [you] make the airport like the local bus depot?”

In a sharp jab, one user remarked, “Baap ne railway khaya ye airport,” alluding to a land-for-job scam involving Lalu Prasad Yadav, the former railway minister of India.

The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) unveiled its ‘Parivartan Patra’ manifesto ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, outlining 24 promises. These include assurances of employment opportunities for youth, a pledge to eradicate unemployment by August 15, and a promise to provide Rs 1 lakh to impoverished women starting from the upcoming Rakshabandhan festival.

Bihar is poised for polling across seven phases to elect its 40 Lok Sabha seats. The initial phase will witness voting in four constituencies, followed by five seats in phases 2 to 5. The final two phases will cover eight seats each.
