Tamil Nadu’s renowned film icon, Joseph Vijay, popularly known as ‘Thalapathy’ Vijay, confirmed recent speculations by announcing his foray into politics. On Friday, he unveiled his political party, christening it ‘Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam’ (victorious Tamil association), marking a significant milestone in his illustrious career.
In a statement, the 49-year-old actor revealed that his party will not be participating in the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha polls. Instead, it aims to make its electoral debut in the 2026 Tamil Nadu assembly elections. Vijay articulated his vision for a corruption-free, progressive, and secular government, expressing concerns over the prevailing political climate characterized by religious and caste divisions, as well as widespread corruption.
Vijay’s decision to enter politics follows in the footsteps of illustrious predecessors from Tamil Nadu’s film industry, including former chief ministers MG Ramachandran (MGR) and J Jayalalithaa, both revered actors in their own right. MGR founded the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), while Jayalalithaa played a pivotal role within the party. Additionally, the late M Karunanidhi, another stalwart of Tamil cinema, served as chief minister and was a prominent figure in the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK).
The DMK and AIADMK remain the dominant political forces in Tamil Nadu, shaping the state’s political landscape for decades. Vijay’s entry into politics adds a new dimension to the state’s electoral arena, infused with the star power and charisma he commands among millions of fans.
