Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK president M K Stalin has once again voiced his strong opposition to the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), which was passed by Parliament in December 2019 but is yet to be implemented due to pending rules.

Stalin’s renewed criticism of the CAA was prompted by Union minister Shantanu Thakur’s announcement on January 28 in West Bengal, stating that the law would be implemented nationwide within seven days.

Despite being in Spain for an official visit, CM Stalin took to social media to assure the people of Tamil Nadu that his administration would not allow the Citizenship (Amendment) Act to be enforced in the state.

In his statement, Stalin also targeted the principal Opposition AIADMK for previously supporting the passage of the CAA in Parliament during its alliance with the BJP. He accused the BJP of undermining communal harmony and accused the AIADMK of collaborating in advancing the BJP’s agenda through “insidious dramas.”

The issue of the CAA has been contentious in Tamil Nadu, particularly due to its potential impact on Sri Lankan Tamils who have migrated to the state over the years. Stalin’s steadfast opposition to the CAA has remained consistent, with the DMK maintaining its vocal stance against the law since its inception when the party was in the Opposition.

The Citizenship (Amendment) Act aims to grant Indian citizenship to Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis, and Christians from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan who entered India before December 31, 2014.
