In a stern warning to the nation’s youth, the Supreme Court of India on Monday expressed grave concern over the escalating problem of drug abuse, noting that substance misuse has regrettably become a symbol of being “cool” among young people. The court’s observations came during a ruling on a National Investigation Agency (NIA) probe into Ankush Vipan Kapoor, who is accused of being part of a drug trafficking network smuggling heroin from Pakistan into India via sea routes.

The bench, led by Justices BV Nagarathna and N Kotiswar Singh, highlighted the devastating socio-economic and psychological consequences of drug abuse, emphasizing its detrimental impact on the future of India’s youth. Justice Nagarathna, who delivered the operative part of the judgment, pointed out that the growing drug problem is threatening to “corrode the shine of the nation’s youth.”

While affirming the NIA’s investigation into Kapoor, the court called for immediate and coordinated action from all sectors of society to combat the menace of drug abuse. Justice Nagarathna urged parents, society, and state authorities to come together and address this urgent issue to prevent further harm to the younger generation.

In addition to its verdict, the Supreme Court issued specific guidelines to the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), directing them to lead a unified response to combat the increasing trend of drug abuse. The court’s decision underscores the need for a multi-pronged approach involving awareness campaigns, stricter law enforcement, and enhanced rehabilitation programs for those struggling with substance abuse.

The full text of the judgment is expected to be released later today, but the court’s message is clear: drug abuse is a growing crisis, and it is imperative for all stakeholders to join hands to safeguard the future of India’s youth.
