In a significant legal development, the Supreme Court delivered a verdict on Wednesday upholding the caste certificate of BJP MP Navneet Rana from Amravati, overturning the previous ruling by the Bombay High Court.

The controversy surrounding Rana’s caste certificate dates back to June 8, 2021, when the Bombay High Court canceled her certificate and imposed a hefty financial penalty of two lakh rupees. Following this verdict, Rana promptly appealed to the Supreme Court, seeking justice and a reversal of the High Court’s decision.

The legal battle intensified in 2017 when former MPs Anandrao Adsul and Sunil Bhalerao lodged petitions challenging the authenticity of Rana’s caste certificate. The crux of the matter revolved around allegations that Rana had misrepresented her caste status as scheduled tribe while filing her election application, with claims that the certificate in question was bogus. These petitions further alleged that Rana had submitted a false caste certificate even before the Caste Certificate Committee, thereby questioning the legitimacy of her tribal heritage claims.
