New Delhi: The Congress party has welcomed the Supreme Court’s interim order on the Waqf (Amendment) Act, calling it a step in the right direction to safeguard constitutional values and address concerns raised in Parliament.

Reacting to the court’s decision, Congress leader KC Venugopal said, “… The issues raised in the Parliament during the discussions have been addressed by the Supreme Court. Not all, but the major ones are addressed. The provision that the person donating to the Waqf should be a practising Muslim for five years was debated in Parliament… The provision to provide all powers to the Collector has been stayed… The verdict of the Supreme Court is welcome…”

Venugopal highlighted that the provisions stayed by the top court were among the most debated and controversial ones during the parliamentary discussions.
