In a scathing rebuke, the Supreme Court on Monday condemned the recently held mayoral elections in Chandigarh, denouncing the process as a ‘mockery of democracy’ and ‘murdering democracy.’ The apex court expressed strong disapproval, stating that it was evident that the Presiding Officer overseeing the elections had tampered with the ballot papers.

Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud remarked, “Is this the way he conducts the elections? This is mockery of democracy. This is murder of democracy. This man should be prosecuted.” The comments came after viewing footage of the contentious election, where a BJP candidate emerged victorious following the disqualification of votes from 8 candidates belonging to the Congress-AAP coalition.

Expressing shock at the conduct of the Presiding Officer, Chief Justice Chandrachud stated, “We are appalled to see his behavior.” He questioned the officer’s actions, asking, “Why is he looking at the camera and running like a fugitive?” The bench, comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala, and Justice Manoj Misra, was hearing a petition filed by AAP Councillor Kuldeep Kumar, the unsuccessful mayoral candidate, challenging the decision of the Punjab and Haryana High Court not to postpone the election immediately.

The Supreme Court’s strong condemnation underscores the gravity of the situation surrounding the Chandigarh mayoral polls and the need for accountability and transparency in electoral processes. The bench’s remarks signal a firm stance against any form of electoral malpractice or misconduct, emphasizing the importance of upholding the integrity of democratic principles. As the legal proceedings unfold, stakeholders and observers await further developments to ensure justice and fairness in the electoral system.
