The Delhi Police has intensified its scrutiny of online activity linked to the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP)-led protests, issuing a formal notice to social media platform X seeking the removal of content alleged to be defamatory against constitutional authorities and requesting detailed information about the accounts responsible for sharing it.
According to police officials, the communication directs the platform to immediately take down posts and videos that are under investigation and preserve all related digital records for future legal proceedings. Authorities have also sought the identities of the users behind the accounts, including their registered names, addresses, mobile numbers, email IDs, and login and logout history with date and time records.
The notice further asks X to share any additional information that may assist investigators and provide a certificate under Section 63(4) of the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA) to authenticate the electronic evidence collected during the probe.
Police Seek Preservation of Digital Evidence
Investigators have instructed the platform not only to remove the disputed material but also to ensure that all associated data remains securely preserved so it can be used during the ongoing investigation. Officials believe maintaining digital evidence is essential for examining the origin and spread of the alleged posts.
Action Follows Earlier Notices Over Protest Content
The latest development comes days after Delhi Police issued similar directions to multiple social media platforms regarding posts uploaded during the student demonstrations at Jantar Mantar and the violence linked to the July 20 ‘Sansad Chalo’ march.
Police had then sought the removal of content containing abusive remarks targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stating that such material violated applicable legal provisions.
Social Media Monitoring Intensified
Officials said dedicated cyber and social media monitoring teams are continuously tracking online activity related to the protests. Whenever objectionable content is detected, notices are sent to the concerned social media intermediaries directing them to remove the material in accordance with legal requirements.
According to the police, several posts flagged during the monitoring exercise have already been removed after notices were issued. Authorities said surveillance of online platforms will continue, and further action will be taken wherever content is found to violate the law as the investigation progresses.
