Islamabad: A suicide car bomb targeting a school bus in Pakistan’s volatile Balochistan province killed four children and left 38 others injured on Tuesday, in what officials are calling a horrific act of terror. The incident occurred in the Khuzdar district as the bus was ferrying children to school, according to local deputy commissioner Yasir Iqbal, as reported by The Associated Press.

Though no group has officially claimed responsibility for the attack, suspicion is likely to fall on ethnic Baloch separatist outfits, which have been active in the region and are known for targeting both security forces and civilians.

Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi condemned the attack in the strongest terms, mourning the loss of innocent lives. “The enemy committed an act of sheer barbarism by targeting innocent children,” he said. “Such beasts deserve no leniency.”

Balochistan, Pakistan’s largest but least populated province, has long been a hotbed of separatist insurgency. Militant groups such as the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA)—which was designated a terrorist organization by the United States in 2019—have carried out repeated attacks in the area.
