Sports Ministry Lifts Suspension on Wrestling Federation of India, Restores NSF Status

New Delhi: The Sports Ministry on Tuesday revoked the suspension of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), reinstating its recognition as the National Sports Federation (NSF). The decision comes after the WFI took corrective measures following its suspension on December 24, 2023, for hastily announcing the U-15 and U-20 National Championships without approval.

The move allows WFI to resume domestic competitions and select national teams for international events. The federation, led by president Sanjay Singh, had faced government ire over hosting national championships in Nandini Nagar, Gonda—an area linked to former WFI chief Brijbhushan Sharan Singh.

In its order, the ministry emphasized that WFI must undo amendments made during its suspension and ensure fair decision-making processes within four weeks. Additionally, non-elected individuals and previously suspended officials must stay disassociated from the federation.
