Lucknow: Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati on Thursday launched a blistering attack on the Samajwadi Party (SP), accusing it of promoting violence and exploiting Dalits for narrow political objectives. In a series of sharp posts on X (formerly Twitter), Mayawati slammed SP’s tactics and alleged that the party was deliberately fostering tension for electoral gain.
“It is known that like other parties, SP too is creating an environment of tension and violence by putting forward people of the party, especially Dalits. Its controversial statements, allegations and counter-allegations, and programmes reflect a politics of extreme narrow selfishness,” she wrote.
Mayawati’s comments come in the wake of heightened tensions within Dalit and backward communities, following controversial remarks made by SP MP Ramji Lal Suman regarding historical figure Rana Sanga. The backlash to Suman’s statement has been severe, with critics demanding an apology and disciplinary action. Rana Sanga, the valiant 16th-century king of Mewar, holds a respected place in Rajput history for his bravery and resistance against Mughal forces.
Further warning against SP’s outreach strategy, Mayawati added, “SP can go to any extent to get Dalit votes. Therefore, along with Dalits, other backward classes and the Muslim community should also avoid falling prey to the political tactics of this party.”
She also took a jab at opportunistic Dalit leaders affiliated with rival parties, saying, “Instead of commenting on the history of others, it would be better if the opportunistic Dalits associated with such parties talk about the goodness and struggles of saints, gurus, and great men of their society, due to whom they have become worthy of something.”
The ongoing controversy escalated further when violence broke out outside the residence of SP MP Ramji Lal Suman in Agra on March 26, where unidentified miscreants pelted stones, broke windows, and vandalized parked vehicles. Despite repeated clarification from Suman—“I have said what I wanted to say 100 times now. I don’t understand why people are saying unnecessary things”—the public anger has not abated.
