Bareilly: Samajwadi Party MP Zia Ur Rehman Barq on Saturday criticised the Uttar Pradesh government for preventing an SP delegation from visiting Bareilly amid the ongoing controversy surrounding the ‘I Love Muhammad’ slogan. Barq called the police action undemocratic and unjustified.

“When the police administration and the government in Bareilly are saying that everything is normal and there is no problem, then what sense does preventing us from going there make? We strongly oppose this and want to meet the victim families to prepare an accurate report that can help them obtain justice,” Barq said.

The SP delegation, which included MPs Iqra Hasan, Mohibbullah Nadvi, and Barq, had set out from the residence of senior party leader and Rajya Sabha MP Harendra Singh Malik on instructions from the Leader of the Opposition, Mata Prasad Pandey, to meet victims allegedly harassed by police action in the city. However, heavy police deployment blocked their movement.

SP MP Awadhesh Prasad criticised the government, stating, “Unfortunately, at the behest of the BJP government, the delegation was stopped. The government is acting in a manner that cannot be imagined, preventing the delegation from raising rightful concerns. The delegation intends to speak truthfully, separate right from wrong, and demand justice, not to incite anything. Preventing this is a violation of democracy. In a democracy, the Opposition has as much right as the ruling party, but the BJP government is trying to suppress this democratic right.”
