New Delhi: Congress leader Sonia Gandhi on Thursday launched a scathing attack on the BJP-led central government over the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, calling it a “brazen assault on the Constitution” and a deliberate attempt to keep society in a state of permanent polarisation.
Speaking at a Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) meeting, Gandhi accused the Narendra Modi-led government of pushing India into an “abyss where the Constitution will exist only on paper.” She alleged that the BJP’s true intention is to demolish constitutional values under the guise of legal reforms.
The Waqf Amendment Bill, 2025, which aims to reform the management and administration of Waqf properties, was passed in the Lok Sabha after a marathon debate in the early hours of Thursday. While the BJP and its allies defended the bill, claiming it would bring transparency and efficiency to Waqf boards, the Opposition fiercely opposed it, calling it anti-Muslim and an attack on minority rights.
“The Modi government has bulldozed the bill through Parliament, just as it has done with other laws that undermine democratic values. We must expose their intention to turn India into a surveillance state,” Gandhi told Congress MPs, urging them to take the issue to the people.
She further criticized the BJP’s push for the ‘One Nation, One Election’ Bill, calling it “another subversion of the Constitution” and reaffirming the Congress party’s strong opposition to the proposal.
The passage of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025 has sparked a fresh political storm, with the Opposition accusing the BJP of targeting minority communities under the pretext of legal reforms. With tensions running high, the debate over the bill is expected to intensify in the coming days.
