Navi Mumbai: Ahead of impending civic elections and following the massive defection from the legislators and members of parliament, the key Shiv Sena functionaries from the Uddhav Thackeray camp are mobilizing the cadre on the ground. On Wednesday, Member of Parliament (MP) from Thane and current chief whip of Uddhav Thackeray camp in the Lok Sabha, Rajan Vichare was on tour of Navi Mumbai.

Vichare called on Vashi ex-corporator and senior Shiv Sena leader Vitthal More, and inaugurated a robotic laboratory in Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) school, and a community centre in Nerul constructed using MPLAD funds.

“The civic elections are still 3-4 months away. I am here today to inaugurate the robotic lab which is the first of its kind in the city. The BMC already has such facilities. We can also consider building similar infrastructure to benefit civic students in other cities,” said Vichare. He however, avoided making any political comment on the current political situation in the Shiv Sena.

Earlier, this month two prominent Shiv Sena leaders from the city Vijay Chougule and Vijay Nahata were removed from the party after they joined the Eknath Shinde camp along with 28 former Shiv Sena corporators.

The NMMC civic elections are due in 2022, the current political crisis is a major blow to the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena which until now is in the opposition benches in the NMMC. In the 2015 NMMC elections, 38 corporators from Shiv Sena were elected, which was 22 more than the previous terms. Later, one corporator died and another one joined the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), and then nine more joined Sena, taking the total corporators to 45. Currently, 28 of them have left the party and joined the Shinde-led faction.
