Mumbai: As the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections approach, seat-sharing negotiations within the ruling Mahayuti alliance are heating up. Sources revealed on Tuesday that the Shiv Sena faction led by Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has asked the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to allow it to contest 112 out of the 227 seats.
During a meeting on Monday between Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy CM Shinde, the Shiv Sena made it clear that it wants to field candidates in as many seats as possible, particularly in Marathi-majority areas of Mumbai where it claims strong grassroots support.
The demand has become a central issue in alliance talks. While the BJP is equally keen on a substantial share, both parties are engaged in detailed discussions to reach a mutually acceptable arrangement. It is still uncertain whether the Ajit Pawar-led NCP will join this seat-sharing formula. Senior leaders from both parties are expected to continue talks in the coming days to finalize the allocation.
Control over the BMC, India’s wealthiest civic body, is seen as a major political prize in Maharashtra’s capital, with implications for the upcoming Assembly elections. The BMC elections are scheduled for January 15, with vote counting on January 16.
This follows the recent two-phase municipal council and nagar panchayat elections, where the Mahayuti alliance performed strongly. According to the Maharashtra State Election Commission, the BJP secured 117 municipal president posts, Shinde’s Shiv Sena won 53, and the NCP led by Ajit Pawar won 37. In contrast, the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition, comprising Congress, Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena-UBT, and NCP-SP, won fewer seats, highlighting the challenge they face ahead of the BMC polls.
With Sena-UBT exploring a possible alliance with Raj Thackeray’s MNS, Congress is now seeking alternative partners, adding another layer of complexity to the high-stakes civic battle in Mumbai.
