Delhi: Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) University has suspended Professor Virendra Balaji Shahare from its Department of Social Work following complaints regarding a question he set on Muslim minorities in India during a semester exam. The action comes as the university initiates an inquiry into the matter.

The controversy arose after students received a first-semester exam paper for the B.A. (Hons) Social Work programme titled “Social Problems in India” for the 2025–26 academic session. One of the questions asked students to “Discuss the atrocities against Muslim minorities in India, giving suitable examples,” which triggered complaints from concerned parties.

According to Jamia officials, the university found “negligence and carelessness” on the part of the faculty member in framing the question. Prof. Shahare has been suspended with immediate effect pending the outcome of the inquiry. JMI has formed a committee to investigate the issue thoroughly.

The university’s suspension order, dated December 23, cites Statute 37(1) to justify the action. It also mentioned that a police complaint would be filed “as per rules.” Saima Saeed, Chief Public Relations Officer of Jamia, confirmed that the university is taking all steps to ensure proper investigation and accountability.
