Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has weighed in on the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, expressing skepticism about the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) ability to replicate its electoral success from 2019. Tharoor remarked that the BJP had already reached its peak performance in many states during the previous polls.

Speaking at ABP Network’s Ideas of India Summit 3.0 on ‘Collaborative Federalism: View of the States’, Tharoor highlighted what he perceived as the BJP’s vulnerability, attributing it to a sense of complacency within the party.

“They peaked in 2019. We are going to see nothing but a downward slide. How much downhill that is going to be depends on how effective the opposition campaign is, which is just picking up,” stated Tharoor.

In his analysis, Tharoor pointed out that the BJP had performed exceptionally well across the Hindi heartland in 2019, securing victories in states like Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, West Bengal, Maharashtra, and Bihar. However, he emphasized that replicating such success in the upcoming elections would be challenging.

“All of this is not going to happen this time because it is impossible for them to repeat those numbers,” Tharoor asserted. He noted that while the BJP’s vote share might increase, the party had already reached its peak in terms of seat acquisition in these regions. Tharoor particularly referenced Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ambitious statement that the BJP alone would surpass the 370-seat mark in the Lok Sabha polls.

Responding to criticism from the Congress regarding his caste identity, Prime Minister Modi reiterated his electoral optimism on Friday, stating, “How do people from Congress forget that the more they abuse Modi’s caste, the stronger the resolve will be for obtaining 400 seats.”
