Shashi Tharoor Calls PM Modi “A Prime Asset for India” Amid Operation Sindoor Praise, Sparks Unease in Congress

New Delhi: Senior Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has once again stirred the political pot with his striking praise of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling him a “prime asset for India” in a column published in The Hindu, where he reflected on India’s international outreach efforts under Operation Sindoor.

Tharoor, who recently participated in the five-nation diplomatic mission, commended the Prime Minister’s “energy, dynamism, and willingness to engage” as vital traits that have helped enhance India’s global presence during turbulent geopolitical times.

The Operation Sindoor outreach was launched in response to Pakistan’s aggressive diplomatic campaigns in global forums, and Tharoor’s involvement had already sparked debate within the Congress Party, with several leaders questioning the Centre’s decision to include an opposition MP in the delegation.

Tharoor’s article emphasized that the mission was “a reflection of unified diplomacy,” focused on “clear communication, strategic soft power, and the long-term importance of public diplomacy.” He argued that despite domestic political rivalries, the world must see India as speaking with one voice on international platforms.

Recommending a forward-looking strategy for Indian diplomacy, Tharoor introduced the idea of the “Three T’s”—Tech, Trade, and Tradition—as pillars for creating “a more just, secure, and prosperous world.”

Within the Congress, Tharoor’s words have created discomfort, with party leaders reportedly distancing themselves from the praise directed at Modi. While no official response has been issued, senior insiders have expressed concern over the timing and tone of the article, especially with ongoing internal debates over the party’s foreign policy stance.

Tharoor, known for his independent views, addressed the controversy in his column, stating, “The goal of Operation Sindoor was to provide clarity to the global community and present a unified Indian position.”
