At the launch of her book, “Pranab My Father: A Daughter Remembers,” Sharmistha Mukherjee, daughter of former President Pranab Mukherjee, delved into her father’s perspective on a pivotal moment involving Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. Mukherjee disclosed her father’s reaction to the controversial incident when Gandhi tore apart a proposed ordinance during a press conference in September 2013.
Sharmistha revealed that she was the one who informed her father about the tearing of the ordinance, which triggered a strong reaction from Pranab Mukherjee. She emphasized his anger at the act, highlighting Mukherjee’s opposition to the proposed ordinance but his belief that it should have been debated in Parliament rather than torn apart at a press conference.
Expressing her perspective on the incident, Sharmistha Mukherjee deemed Gandhi’s actions as arrogant and politically immature. She clarified that while her father opposed the ordinance on principle, he questioned Gandhi’s authority to take such a drastic step, given that Gandhi was not a part of the Cabinet.
The context of this controversy stemmed from a Supreme Court ruling in April 2013, which mandated the immediate disqualification of MPs and MLAs convicted with a minimum two-year sentence, eliminating the three-month period for appeal that existed until then. Later that year, the Congress government introduced an ordinance seeking to overturn this ruling, a move openly criticized by Rahul Gandhi, who labeled it “complete nonsense” and tore the document during the press conference.
Sharmistha Mukherjee also highlighted her father’s viewpoint on Rahul Gandhi’s leadership traits, mentioning Pranab Mukherjee’s observation that Gandhi lacked a “killer instinct” and maintained a certain distance from the party.
The revelation adds a new dimension to the dynamics within the Congress party, shedding light on Pranab Mukherjee’s nuanced perspective on the incident and his thoughts on Rahul Gandhi’s role within the political landscape.
